Program Overview:In 2000, the California Assembly Bill (AB) 1820 was signed into law. The bill requires general internists and family physicians whose patient population consists of 25% or more patients at least 65 years of age to complete at least 20 percent of their mandatory CME, or a minimum of 10 CME hours for every two years of CME reporting, in the field of geriatric medicine. In response to AB 1820 and to ensure physician members are continually receiving the most updated information and training in geriatric care, CAMASC has conducted an educational needs survey among its physician members and, through gap analysis research, identified the five topics below to be addressed.
Topics & Faculty:
  • Hypertension in the Elderly
  • Urinary Tract Infections in the Elderly
  • Pallative Care Advance Directives
  • Diabetes in the Elderly
  • Management of Chronic Pain in the Elderly
  • For detailed objectives and faculty information, please follow the links above.

Purpose:The purpose of this activity is to narrow the existing practice gaps in the identified topics of geriatric medicine  by addressing cultural and ethnic-specific health disparities and new scientific knowledge to improve patient care.  This activity is expected to result in increased competence and better performance in making an appropriate diagnosis, providing effective treatment and referral or follow-up care, with the overall goal of improving outcomes for elderly patients.
Target Audience:This educational activity is designed for physicians and other healthcare providers whose patient population consists of 25% or more patients at least 65 years of age and those who provide health care to or are interested in the health care of the Chinese/Asian American community or the aging population.
Educational Methods:The activity will consist of five (5) live lectures, presented by distinguished faculty to facilitate the different educational needs of a diverse audience. The activity will employ a combination of educational methods, including live didactic lectures, case studies, and interactive techniques such as group discussions, question/answer sessions, post-activity evaluation/survey, and 2-month follow-up evaluation/survey.

All attendees will be asked to complete the post-activity evaluations/surveys online after the conclusion of the CME activity in order to receive certificates of CME credit.

AB 1195:This activity is in compliance with California Assembly Bill 1195 which requires continuing medical education activities with patient care components to include curricula in the subjects of cultural and linguistic competency.
