California. We honor physicians who paid the 2018 CAMASC membership

Program Overview
|
In 2000, AB 1820 was signed into California law. This bill requires general internists and family physicians whose patient population consists of 25% or more patients at least 65 years of age to complete at least 20% of their mandatory CME, or 10 CME hours for every two years of CME reporting, in the field of geriatric medicine.
In 2001, AB 487 was signed into California law. This bill requires most California-licensed physicians (pathologists and radiologists are exempt) to take 12 units, as a one-time requirement, of CME on “pain management” and “the appropriate care and treatment of the terminally ill."
In addition, in 2016, the Department of Health and Human Services released the long-awaited National Pain Strategy, which was written to implement recommendations from the Institute of Medicine. The strategy calls for improving provider education on pain management practices, evaluation of pain treatments, and safe prescription as part of developing a better-informed healthcare workforce with regard to pain management.
In response to AB 1820 and AB 487 and in order to ensure physician members are continually receiving the most updated information and training in geriatrics and pain care, CAMASC has conducted an educational needs survey among its physician members and, through gap analysis research, identified the following five (5) topics to be addressed:
- "Dermatologic Conditions in Geriatric Patients"
- "Sarcopenia in the elderly"
- "Palliative/Supportive Care"
- "Pain in Cancer Survivors"
- "Depression in Adult and Elderly Chinese"

Educational Purpose
|
The purpose of this activity is to provide clinicians with the practice-relevant information based on geriatrics medicine and pain management curriculums in caring for the elderly patients. This activity is also expected to result in improved competency, better performance in making an appropriate diagnosis, providing effective treatment and referral or follow-up care. In particular, these lectures will apply cultural and linguistic competence and focus on the care of Chinese/Asian patients whom our physician members treat the most. The target audience for this activity will be physicians and physician assistants whose patient population consists of 25% or more patients at least 65 years of age and those who provide health care to or are interested in the health care of the Chinese/Asian American community.

Educational Methods
|
This CME activity will consist of five (5) lectures, presented by distinguished faculty to facilitate the different educational needs of a diverse audience. This CME activity will employ a combination of educational methods, including live didactic lecture, group discussions, case studies, review of literatures, group discussion and interactive techniques such as a question/answer session, pre/post educational assessment, and a 30-day follow-up post activity survey. CAMASC has implemented an Audience Response System (ARS) as one of the tools to enhance the learning experience and conduct outcome measurement for this activity.

This activity is in compliance with California Assembly Bill 1195 which requires
continuing medical education activities with patient care components to include
curricula in the subjects of cultural and linguistic competency.
