Presentation: Supersize Me: Childhood Obesity in Chinese-Americans

Time: Friday Afternoon
Purpose: To increase health care providers’ awareness of this health issue and improve their understanding of effective strategies for promoting healthy weight and healthy lifestyle in Chinese-Americans.
Objectives:
Describe the prevalence and risk factors for childhood obesity in Chinese-Americans.
Identify effective strategies for promoting healthy weight and healthy lifestyles for Chinese-American children.
Discuss current research and future work in the area of childhood obesity prevention in Chinese-Americans.

Bio:
Research/Academic Interests
Dr. Chen’s research focuses on the impact of familial factors on Chinese and Chinese-American children's health, with an emphasis on obesity in school-age children. Her research focuses on child-centered and family-oriented methods from a bio-behavioral model. It aims to develop culturally and developmentally appropriate intervention programs.
Current Projects/Practice
Her current completed projects include (a) randomized clinical trail on overweight prevention intervention in Chinese-American children (8-10 years old) and (b) internet-based randomized clinical trail on health promotion and overweight prevention in Chinese-American children (10-14 years old). The aim of these prevention interventions in Chinese-American children is to examine the feasibility and efficacy of a child-centered and family-focused behavioral intervention on improving health behavior, psychosocial function, anthropometrics, and biochemical indices in Chinese-American children.
Teaching
My teaching is focused on courses related children's health and on the research process; in particular, the designing, conducting, and implementing research utilization in nursing practice and quantitative measurement and data collection.
Selected Publications
Dr. Chen has published more than 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals in the area of childhood obesity and cardiovascular disease prevention in Asian Americans and an author of a chapter in cardiovascular disease prevention in Asian Americans.
