Presentation Title: The Development and Implementation of Transitional and Palliative Care Porgram at Chinese Hospital, San Francisco

Dr. Quock and Ms. Cmiel will show how an understanding of Chinese cultural factors relevant to POLST orders enabled the introduction of a culturally sensitive palliative care program.

Time: Sunday Morning

Purpose:
To improve on clinical competence and performance in the delivery of palliative care through culturally sensitive education of patients andf their personal caregivers in the Chinese community

Objectives:

  1. Examine the development of a palliative care program to reduce re-admissions in a culturally sensitivemanner in Chinese Hospital, San Francisco
  2. Incorporate cultural sensitivity that is applicable to patient care inpalliative care program
  3. Demonstrate the effects of a culturally sensitive palliative care program such as patient outcomes

Chief Nursing Officer; Chair, ARTCC and Chair, Palliative Care Committee, Chinese Hospital, San Francisco

Bio:
Peggy Cmiel, RN, BSN, MBA, is currently the Chief Nursing Officer at Chinese Hospital in San Francisco. She is responsible for the management of Nursing, Surgical Services, Chronic Disease Management, Utilization Management, Social Services, Patient Relations, Infection Prevention and Education. During her 3 years at Chinese Hospital, she has focused on improving patient satisfaction, decreasing preventable readmissions to the hospital, developing a culturally sensitive palliative care program, supporting outreach to the Chinese community, and implementing the Electronic Medical Record. Prior to assuming the position of CNO at Chinese Hospital, Peggy worked at California Pacific Medical Center as Director of Nursing for Acute and Post Acute Nursing Units.

During Peggy’s career she has published articles on the nursing care of patients undergoing Microsurgery Replantation and Reconstruction in the American Journal of Nursing, Critical Care Nursing Quarterly and Orthopedic Nursing. She has given lecture presentations on Digital Replantation, Muscle Transplants, Leech Use, Patient Safety and Fall Reduction in the Hospitalized Patient.

Peggy is a native of Chicago and received her BSN from Loyola University and her MBA from Southern California University of Professional Studies. Peggy currently lives in San Francisco with her musician husband and their 2 wonderful sons.
