Presentation: Perspectives for Preventive and Therapeutic Vaccines for Cervical Cancer

Purpose: To educate the physicians about the current status of cervical cancer, the current preventive HPV vaccines and the development of therapeutic HPV vaccines for cervical cancer
Objectives:
Review the current status of cervical cancer in the Chinese population as well as in the world.
Describe the current commercially available HPV preventive vaccines and the new generation of preventive vaccines.
Recognize the necessity for and the current development of therapeutic HPV vaccines.

Bio:
T.-C. Wu is a Professor in the Departments of Pathology, Oncology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins University. He received his M.D. degree from National Taiwan University (1975-1982) and his Ph.D. degree (1984-1989) and clinical training (1989-1995) from the Johns Hopkins University. He is currently licensed to practice medicine in the State of Maryland and is and board certified pathologist. Currently he is a Research Director of Gynecologic Pathology and Program Director of the Cervical Cancer Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) at Hopkins. His research is mainly focused on the molecular pathogenesis and development of HPV vaccines. He has contributed approx. 144 peer reviewed publications and 58 editorials, reviews and book chapters in this area. He also has several patents and inventions related to HPV vaccines. Furthermore, he has extramural sponsorship from several funding agencies including National Institutes of Health and private foundations. He has extensive experiences in teaching and mentoring pre-doctoral and post-doctoral students and fellows. In addition, he has served as a member of the editorial board for several journals including Diagnostic Molecular Pathology, American Journal of Pathology, Gene Therapy, Cancer Research, American Journal of Translational Research and International journal of Gynecological Pathology. He has also served as an editor for Journal of Biomedical Science, Journal and Journal of Cancer Molecules. He has also served as a reviewer for several journals including Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Nature Medicine, Immunity, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci., Journal of Clinical Investigation, Nature Biotechnology, Cancer Cell and Nature Reviews Cancer. Dr. Wu has received the Passano Physician Scientist Award as well as scientific awards from the Binford-Dammin society of International Academy of Pathology and the Chinese American Medical Society. He has been invited as a keynote speaker at several institutions worldwide. He has also served as a member of several study sections, advisory Committees and review groups to review grants from NIH and many other countries. Dr. Wu has been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He is the formal President of International Association of Chinese Pathologists and the International Binford-Dammin Infectious Disease Society.
