Presentation: Current Status of Weight Reduction Surgery

Purpose: To provide a ethnically relevant review on the obesity epidemic and an overview on the variety of bariatric operations

Bio:
Edward H. Phillips, MD, FACS, is Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery and Director of the Division of General Surgery. He is also the Director of the Center for Minimally Invasive and Weight Loss Surgery and Director of the Saul and Joyce Brandman Breast Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles . He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Los Angeles County-University of Southern California (USC) Medical Center.
Though born in Boston, Massachusetts, Dr. Phillips has spent nearly all of his life in California. Dr. Phillips attended the University of Southern California School of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1973. He completed his Internship and Surgical Residency at Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center. He has practiced at Cedars Sinai Medical Center for thirty years, and he is the first holder of the Storz-Berci Chair in Minimally Invasive Surgery.
Dr. Phillips is considered a leading practitioner, clinical researcher, and authority on Laparoscopic Surgery, diseases of the biliary tract, and diseases of the breast. He played a key role in creating the Bariatric Surgery Center and a multidisciplinary breast center at Cedars-Sinai. He was recently elected as Vice-President of the Southern California Chapter, American College of Surgeons, He has just completed his tenure as Governor of the American College of Surgeons, and is a member of several prestigious professional societies, including the American College of Surgeons, SSAT, SAGES, Pacific Coast Surgical and Western Surgical societies. He has made scientific presentations in thirteen countries. Dr. Phillips has edited six surgical textbooks and is published in four languages. He has also written numerous book chapters for many of the leading textbooks in surgery and authored over a hundred peer-reviewed articles.
Despite his demanding schedule, he continues to make time for his passions: Patient Care, Surgery, the art of healing, and an occasional round of golf.
